Pool Renovation

Pool Renovation for In-Ground Pools in the Triad and Triangle

A pool renovation updates a worn in-ground pool without building a new one. At Pinnacle Pool Service, a renovation can include new concrete around the pool, new tile at the waterline and a fresh plaster finish inside. Pinnacle manages the whole job, and the concrete, tile and plaster work is done by experienced specialist subcontractors.

We are a family-owned, local company serving the Triangle and the Piedmont Triad. We work on in-ground pools only. If your pool has started to look its age, this page walks through what a renovation covers and how the process works.

What a Pool Renovation Covers

Every pool is different, so the work depends on what your pool actually needs.

Concrete around the pool. Cracked, sunken or stained concrete is often the first thing people notice. New concrete gives the rest of the renovation a clean frame and removes trip hazards around the water.
Tile. Waterline tile takes a beating from sun and scale. Replacing loose, cracked or dated tile keeps the edge of the pool looking sharp and sealed. Pinnacle takes tile jobs now, using experienced tile subcontractors. Read more about pool tile repair and replacement.
Plaster. Most renovations include a new interior finish. The pool is drained, the old surface is prepped and a new finish goes on. We manage plaster jobs with specialist plaster subcontractors, which is how most of the pool industry handles this trade. Read more about pool resurfacing and replastering.

On a full renovation, we do the tile first and the plaster second. Tile work at the waterline can chip or stain a fresh surface, so the new interior finish goes on last.

Signs Your Pool Is Due for a Renovation

Here are common signs that a pool is ready for more than a quick fix:

The plaster feels rough and snags swimsuits or scrapes feet
Stains or blotches that don’t brush out or respond to chemistry
Hollow spots, flaking or pieces of plaster lifting off the wall
Cracked, loose or missing waterline tile
Concrete around the pool that is cracked, heaving or pulling away from the coping
A pool that loses water faster than it should (worth a leak check first)
A pool that works fine but looks like it belongs to a different decade

One or two of these on their own may only need a repair. When several show up together, a full renovation usually makes more sense than patching one problem at a time.

Renovation Services

A renovation can be one service or several. Here is where to start, depending on your pool.

Pool Resurfacing

For plaster pools with a worn, stained or rough interior. The pool is drained, the surface is prepped and a new finish goes on. Choose from NPT finishes, or Pebble Tec® on request. See pool resurfacing.

Pool Tile

For waterline tile that is cracked, loose, scaled over or simply dated. Repairs for a few tiles, full replacement when the whole line is done. We meet with you in person and show you tile choices. See pool tile repair and replacement.

Vinyl Liner Replacement

For vinyl liner pools, the liner is the finish. Liners typically last 10 to 15 years, and replacing one is its own service. See vinyl liner replacement.

How a Pinnacle Renovation Runs

Consultation. It starts with a conversation about what bothers you about the pool now and what you want it to look like. Quotes for tile and resurfacing are free.
Scope and quote. You get a professional written quote that lists each stage of the work, its cost and the schedule. We send it by text or email.
Scheduling. Most projects start within three to four weeks of signing, depending on the project. Pinnacle manages the job, and the concrete, tile and plaster work is done by experienced subcontractors.
The work. You deal with Pinnacle for everything, even while a subcontractor is on site. We call or text you as each stage wraps up.
Handoff. The pool is refilled, and Pinnacle handles the start-up and care of the new finish. Depending on the plaster, you can see up to a 10-year warranty on it, as long as proper water chemistry is kept and recorded.

Finishes We Offer

We offer NPT pool finishes on our resurfacing work, and we’ll walk you through the NPT options that suit your pool.

Some homeowners come to us already set on Pebble Tec®. If that is you, we bring in an authorized Pebble Tec installer as our subcontractor, and you still deal with Pinnacle from start to finish. A Pebble Tec job usually costs more than our standard finishes. If you’d like to compare, we can quote both an NPT finish and Pebble Tec for your pool.

Compare Pebble Tec and NPT finishes to see how each one is described by its maker.

Frequently Asked Questions

A pool renovation is any work that restores an existing pool’s surfaces. It can include new concrete around the pool, new waterline tile and a new plaster finish. Some pools need only one of those, so the scope depends on the pool.

The cost depends on the size of the pool and which parts are being redone. A tile-only job and a full renovation that touches every surface are very different projects. Quotes for tile and resurfacing are free, so the best way to get a number is to ask for one. Financing is available for projects over $6,000.

The timeline depends on the scope of work and the weather. Most projects start within three to four weeks of signing, and your written quote includes the schedule.

Yes. On a vinyl liner pool, replacing the liner is usually the main job. Liners typically last 10 to 15 years. See our vinyl liner replacement service.

Yes. We bring in an authorized Pebble Tec installer for your renovation, usually at a higher cost than our standard NPT finishes. Pinnacle still handles the job from start to finish. Compare Pebble Tec and NPT before you decide.
